The Papagayo (or parrot) embodies an array of symbolism in Mesoamerican cultures.

First and foremost, we are struck by the vibrant colours of these majestic birds - a sight to behold. The stunning plumage colours were seen as an incredible expression of life force and spiritual power, as well as being linked to the sun, heavenly bodies and realms. With their impressive plumage, their feathers also became ceremonial regalia for authority figures, becoming highly prized symbols of prestige, wealth and nobility.

Parrots are also known for their vocal abilities which lead them to be known as symbols of communication between gods and humans; assisting shamans to connect and bring through messages from the spirit realm; messengers of the divine.

From a divine being of wealth, prestige and beauty, to a symbol of love and companionship and representing communication through the realms, the parrot holds a diverse range of symbolism and importance for many.
