Representing the eye of the Sky god Horus (the hawk), which he lost in a great battle against his uncle Set, god of the Underworld.
In an effort to avenge his father, Horus went to battle with his uncle and, though he was ultimately successful in his fight, Set had managed to cause Horus to lose an eye and tear it into 6 pieces. Thanks to the god Thoth, the eye was fully restored therefore giving Horus his strength back and becoming a symbol of healing, protection & rebirth.
The design of the eye is not merely aesthetic however; each part of the eye represents 6 senses - smell, taste, touch, hearing, sound & thought.
These 6 fragments also represent mathematical fractions which were used in ancient Egypt by mathematicians & astronomers and symbolise universal balance and wisdom.
